Flatey Church marks centenary with anniversary service

Flatey Church is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year, with a commemorative service and other events on the island, mbl.is reports.
A historical walk around Flatey in Breiðafjörður will begin at noon on Friday, 15 August. The anniversary service will start at 2pm at Flatey Church, where Guðrún Karls Helgadóttir, the Bishop of Iceland, will preach. Hildur María Sigurðardóttir will serve at the altar.
Coffee will be served to island residents and visitors at 4pm.
The church was consecrated in 1926 and has been an integral part of the community in Flatey ever since. The building was designed by Guðjón Samúelsson.
Sigvaldi Kaldalóns’s song Ísland ögrum skorið, with lyrics by Eggert Ólafsson, was performed for the first time at the church’s consecration. The church also contains a notable altarpiece by Baltasar B. Samper.
A programme marking the church’s centenary has been held in Flatey this summer. It included a photography exhibition on 20 June featuring scenes from the church’s history, as well as a lecture by Dr Sigfús Jónasson on the church’s history and religious life in Flatey.
A concert by the Siggi String Quartet and flautist Emilía Rós Sigfúsdóttir was also held that day.
On 25 July, Fuglavinir held an educational lecture on birdlife in Flatey. Una Torfadóttir also performed at the church with Tumi Torfason and others, while the Kría Run took place in support of Flatey Church.
