Accessibility plans for National Broadcasting Archive in Føroyar to take years

Can people still look back at the moon landing in 1969? Or the national match against Northern Ireland in Belfast in 1991?

“Yes, it is still the plan to make the National Broadcasting Archive as accessible as possible,” says Ivan Niclasen, director of Kringvarp Føroya.

“But it’s going to take some time, and it will happen gradually,” he acknowledges.

Progress Stalled

In a recent radio news segment, Mass Hoydal, former project leader at Savnsgull, criticized that no progress has been made to enhance the accessibility of the broadcast archive for the Faroese people since the decision was made to digitize the entire archive during the national festival last year.

However, Ivan Niclasen strongly rebuts the suggestion that there is a lack of will to proceed with this initiative or that the project has come to a halt.

“We are working on developing our archive, but we will do it in a way that aligns with the overall digitization strategy of Kringvarp Føroya,” confirms Niclasen.

He anticipates it will take about four to five years before people see significantly more of the National Broadcasting Archive compared to what is currently available.
