Pori plans warning signs after dangerous currents sweep family offshore

Pori plans to install clearer warning signs about dangerous sea currents at Herrainpäivät beach next to Yyteri, Yle reports.

The proposal follows a dangerous incident in early August, when a family swimming at the beach was carried far from shore by a current.

The local coast guard station had called for the existing blue-and-white signs to be replaced with signs that communicate the danger more clearly.

Marika Virtanen, a marketing specialist for the city of Pori, said the city assessed the situation at Herrainpäivät after the incident.

“There are signs at every car park and on every access route that mention the currents, but there are no proper warning signs,” Virtanen said in an email.

The city’s communications and brand unit has prepared a proposal for new signs at the beach. The plan will still be reviewed with the authorities.

“The matter is progressing on the city’s side, and we are trying to get these installed as quickly as possible,” Virtanen said.
