Border guards arrest person after illegal crossing into Norway

Norwegian border guards arrested a person who crossed illegally from Russia into Norway during the night, NRK reported. The arrest took place at around 1 a.m. on Thursday in the area between Korpfjell and Grense Jakobselv in Sør-Varanger.

The arrest was carried out without incident, Tarjei Sirma-Tellefsen, chief of staff at the Finnmark police district, said in a press release.

Police said the person is neither Norwegian nor Russian. They declined to provide further information for privacy reasons.

The case is being investigated as an illegal border crossing. Police will seek to establish the person’s identity, purpose and movements.

After the arrest, the Norwegian Armed Forces and police increased their presence in the area, using dog patrols, drones and border patrols. Sirma-Tellefsen said there was no evidence that more people had been travelling with the person or were in the terrain.
