Cars hit two schoolchildren at crossings in western Uusimaa

Two separate traffic accidents in western Uusimaa involved drivers hitting children at pedestrian crossings on Thursday morning, Yle reports, citing police. Neither child is believed to have suffered serious injuries based on initial information.

The first accident occurred in Lohja shortly before 8 a.m. A driver hit a schoolchild who was crossing the road on a scooter. The child fell to the ground and was taken to hospital for examination.

The second incident happened in Karkkila shortly after 8 a.m. when a driver hit a child who had cycled onto a pedestrian crossing. Initial information indicated that the child was thrown several metres through the air and was treated for injuries in hospital.

Police have filed criminal reports in both cases for endangering traffic safety.

Police also monitored traffic near dozens of schools in different cities and municipalities on Thursday. Speeding was among the most common violations recorded. At one school in Espoo, officers issued seven speeding fines within a relatively short period, police said.
