Former European Parliament member Nils Torvalds will stand as a candidate for the Finnish Parliament in the Varsinais-Suomi electoral district, Yle reports.

Torvalds said the RKP seat in the district must be saved. Sandra Bergqvist currently represents RKP in the district and is also the party’s deputy chair.

“The RKP parliamentary seat in Varsinais-Suomi must now be saved. Standing as a candidate means that I take this task extremely seriously,” Torvalds said in a party statement. He said he wanted to work in Parliament for a strong Varsinais-Suomi and for all of Finland, including when making difficult decisions.

Torvalds has family roots in Varsinais-Suomi. He was born in Tammisaari and lives in Helsinki. He served as a member of the European Parliament from 2012 to 2024.
