Cloud cover may disrupt views of Iceland’s total solar eclipse

There is little change in the forecast for Iceland’s total solar eclipse, but brief breaks in the cloud remain possible, mbl.is reports.

The western part of the country is expected to be cloudy, while the clearest conditions are forecast in the northwest, particularly in the Westfjords and their urban areas.

Showers are expected in the southwest and on the Snæfellsnes peninsula, with occasional showers also possible in the Westfjords.

“Showers mean that it rains, but it can then clear up. There is strong rising air in the middle of the cloud and sinking air around it, which can cause the sun to be visible between showers, so there is definitely a chance,” meteorologist Birta Líf Kristinsdóttir told mbl.is.

She said the air mass had so far produced showers with little sunshine visible between them. Conditions may brighten temporarily before the next shower arrives, she said, adding that the eclipse will last only two minutes and that people in the southwest could still be lucky enough to catch a gap in the clouds.
