School prepares for first day as principal and new teacher look ahead

As the school year begins, Skúlin við Løgmannabreyt, a school in Hoyvík, is welcoming its pupils. Kringvarp Føroya spoke to outgoing principal Høgni Joensen and newly qualified teacher Tórun Lindenskov Samuelsen on the morning programme Summarmorgun.

“The most important thing is that the children in the first grade feel safe from the start,” Joensen said. “It is very important that the first day of school is successful.”

Samuelsen said she had always been drawn to teaching, although she worked in an office for many years. She therefore attended teacher training college and completed her studies this year.

“I am happy that I got a job at this particular school, because my children have attended and still attend it, and I like the culture at the school,” she said.

Neither Samuelsen nor Joensen is concerned about artificial intelligence. They agreed that it could become a useful tool if used correctly.

Joensen has been principal of the school since it opened in 2008. He will step down on September 1 because of his age, but said he was not worried because he knew the school was in good hands.
