Two hikers rescued from Baula mountain in West Iceland after injury

Two hikers were rescued by emergency services on the mountain Baula in West Iceland late last night. One of the hikers suffered a broken arm after sliding down a steep slope, necessitating assistance. They were situated at a considerable altitude when the incident occurred, with deteriorating visibility and a treacherous path down.

Rescue teams from West Iceland responded quickly, with the support of a helicopter from the Coast Guard. However, visibility conditions were insufficient for the helicopter to land on the mountain, so it instead landed on the main road at Bröttubrekka.

Rescue personnel made their way up the mountain and reached the hikers at around 2:00 AM. At that point, both individuals were quite cold and distressed, with the injured hiker in significant pain. They stabilized his arm and administered pain relief medication. Both hikers were then guided down the mountain safely, according to responders’ reports.

By approximately 4:00 AM, the injured hiker was aboard the Coast Guard helicopter, which transported him to receive medical care in Reykjavik. The second hiker continued down the mountain under the supervision of rescuers and was met by a family member at the base.
