Minister surprised by funding shortfall for Fámjin road

Jacob Vestergaard, the minister for transport, was surprised after Landsverk, the government body overseeing the project, said on Tuesday that funding would not be enough to bring the road from the Fámjin tunnel down to the village up to current standards, Kringvarp Føroya reported.

The most urgent improvements are expected to be completed by the end of the year. However, completing the road fully will require additional funding, said Sigurð Ó. Vang, head of Landsverk’s project department.

Vestergaard said the funding shortfall was new information to him and that the government would now have to consider the matter as part of its upcoming priorities.

He declined to guarantee that the necessary money would be allocated, noting that the Faroese Parliament makes the final financial decisions.

Asked how long residents of Fámjin might have to wait for a completed road, Vestergaard said it should probably be finished within a year.
