Two homicide suspects arrested in Reykjavík

Two men suspected in connection with an alleged homicide in Vallargerði on Kársnes were arrested outside a residential building in Gnoðarvogur, Reykjavík, on Sunday afternoon, mbl.is reports.

At least one of the men had just got into a vehicle when he was arrested. A witness said he was overpowered forcefully by members of the police special unit.

Several people have been arrested in connection with the case, while three have been remanded in custody. Two of them are Polish nationals and one is Icelandic. The deceased was also Polish.

Elimar Hauksson, the lawyer for one of the men arrested in Gnoðarvogur, said a two-week remand order against his client had been appealed to the Court of Appeal.

According to mbl.is, the men arrested in Gnoðarvogur have been questioned. Police have not disclosed how the death occurred, whether weapons were used or, if so, how.

Attack investigated as homicide

The attack took place in Vallargerði in Kársnes, Kópavogur, on August 9. Police and medical crews were called to a residential building because of a serious assault.

A man was taken to Landspítali hospital with serious injuries. He died later that day, after which police opened a homicide investigation.

Two dark or black-clad men were seen near the building. Neighbours said they had seen the men approach the house before the attack, while other witnesses described people running in the street around the time of the incident.

One of the men remanded in custody has said he was only the driver. According to his lawyer, he claims he simply drove a vehicle from point A to point B and denies direct involvement in the homicide. His remand order is also expected to be appealed to the Court of Appeal.

The investigation remains at an early stage. Police have not publicly disclosed the suspected motive, the precise sequence of events or the alleged role of each person arrested.
