Food prices fall as butter leads supermarket price cuts

Food prices in Denmark were 2.1 percent lower in July than in the same month last year, with dairy products among the biggest fallers, DR reports based on new figures from Statistics Denmark.

Butter is currently on offer for 6 kroner at SuperBrugsen and Kvickly, while Lidl and Føtex are offering it for 9.95 kroner.

The largest price decline was recorded for butter, oils and milk-based fats, which became 11.8 percent cheaper. Cheese and yoghurt also fell sharply in price, as did several types of milk.

Meat also helped bring down food prices. Among chilled meat products, pork and lamb saw the biggest price decreases.

Personal finance economist Brian Friis Helmer of Sydbank said lower food prices would benefit Danish households by reducing the amount they have to pay at the checkout.

However, not all food became cheaper. Fresh citrus fruit had the biggest price increase, rising 16.9 percent. Cocoa drinks and frozen fruit also became significantly more expensive, while eggs increased in price as well.

Overall, non-alcoholic beverages rose 0.8 percent in price, while alcoholic beverages increased by 1.3 percent.
