Election commission removes wording on uncertain voters

European Union, Iceland, referendum

Mbl.is reports that wording on the National Election Commission’s information website about the referendum has been changed without the change being announced.

The website previously said that a no voter rejected membership, “at least not for now”, while a yes voter was “not necessarily” supporting membership. This asymmetrical interpretation of the two response options has now been removed. It also does not appear in a booklet distributed across Iceland.

A Morgunbladid analysis examines the National Election Commission’s information about the referendum, including uncertainty about the consequences of both options, the possibility of a second referendum, the status of Iceland’s 2009 application and the booklet’s description of the membership process. The commission says it maintained complete neutrality when preparing the information material.
