A bus caught fire near Glerártorg in Akureyri on Monday morning, mbl.is reports. Police and firefighters quickly brought the blaze under control.
The fire was reported at 8:43am as the bus was travelling east along Tryggvabraut, near the shopping centre. The bus was empty except for the driver, who exited immediately and notified the fire service. The fire station is nearby.
A duty officer said the fire most likely started in the engine compartment at the rear of the bus. A fuel tank was located close to the suspected point of ignition, increasing the potential danger if the fire had spread.
A large amount of smoke developed at the scene, but the driver was not in danger because he had left the vehicle himself.
