Several people are in police custody after a man died in Kársnes on Sunday in circumstances believed to involve criminal conduct, mbl.is reports. Police operations in Gnoðarvogur, in eastern Reykjavík, were connected to the case.

Agnes Eide Kristínardóttir, chief superintendent in the investigative division of the Capital Region Police, said the investigation was at an early stage. She declined to disclose how many people had been detained.

Police said the man died at Landspítali University Hospital in the afternoon after being attacked. One person was arrested shortly after the incident, while several others were detained during police operations in eastern Reykjavík.

Police were seen searching vegetation at the scene on Sunday evening. Authorities would not comment on the search or say whether a weapon had been used or seized.

Police also said they could not confirm whether the case was connected to a possible settling of scores in the underworld. The investigation has been given the highest priority, and no further information was available.
