Finland is celebrating Tove Jansson and Finnish art today, Yle reports. The day marks 112 years since the birth of Jansson, the artist best known internationally for creating the Moomin characters.
Jansson worked as an illustrator, painter, cartoonist and comic artist. She also wrote books for both children and adults. Her work has been translated into more than 50 languages.
During her career, Jansson received numerous awards, including the Pro Finlandia Medal and the Topelius Prize. She died in 2001 at the age of 86.
The Ministry of the Interior has recommended Tove Jansson and Finnish Art Day as an official flag flying day since 2020.
