mbl.is reports that an open meeting on the militarisation of the European Union and abuse of power will be held at noon today at Safnahúsið, a cultural building on Hverfisgata in Reykjavík.

The meeting is part of a series organised by Ögmundur Jónasson, a former member of parliament and minister, under the title Til róttækrar skoðunar. Jónasson will chair the discussion.

Four foreign experts are scheduled to speak: Alfred de Zayas, Thomas Fazis, Hüsseyins Dogrus and Jeffrey Sachs. De Zayas served for many years as a United Nations expert on international relations. Fazis has drawn attention to growing censorship by the European Union. Dogrus is a journalist in Berlin who is currently facing censorship and pressure over his reporting. Sachs, a well-known analyst of international politics, will participate remotely.

The organisers say militarisation and abuse of power cannot be ignored ahead of a referendum on Iceland’s application for European Union membership, as both issues will have far-reaching effects on all member states.

The meeting is expected to last about one hour and is open to everyone.
