Hamragarður finally gets repairs after 14 years

Hamragarður, an elderly and nursing home in Vágur, is finally being renovated 14 years after its first residents moved in, KVF reports. The building had several serious defects from the day it was taken into use.

The work was delayed for years because the state and the municipalities disagreed over who should pay for the repairs. An agreement was reached only after windows began falling out of the building and the damage became visible.

Under the final agreement, the state will cover 75 per cent of the cost, while the municipalities will pay the remaining 25 per cent. The renovation began in February and is estimated to cost around 14 million kroner.

Bjarni Johansen, mayor of Vágur and deputy chairman of the board of the Suðuroy housing and home-care service, said Hamragarður was in poor condition when the work began. The project is scheduled for completion in October.
