Renamed Lenin Museum loses foreign visitors in quiet summer
Visitor numbers at Tampere’s Museum of East Relations Nootti fell by more than a third in July compared with the previous year, Yle reported. The museum’s director, Kalle Kallio, said foreign tourists now account for about half as many visitors as they did at the former Lenin Museum.
The museum recorded 1,172 visitors this July, down from 1,844 in July 2025.
“We are currently slightly behind last year. The summer has not been particularly busy,” Kallio said. He added that the museum remained hopeful visitor numbers could increase in the autumn.
Nootti focuses on the relations and history between Finland and its eastern neighbour. It was previously known as the Lenin Museum.
According to visitor research, the share of foreign tourists has halved since the museum operated under its former name. Kallio said the new museum was now working to establish its own audience, identity and brand.
“There is quite a lot of work to do. It is important to remember that Tampere has many museums that attract large numbers of visitors, so competition here is tough,” he said.
Visitor surveys show that audiences are more satisfied with Nootti than with its predecessor. The exhibition has been described as knowledgeable and interesting, while its treatment of history has been considered balanced.
Nootti is operated by the Workers’ Museum Werstas, a museum designated by the Ministry of Education and Culture as a national responsibility museum. The decline in visitors has not affected Nootti’s finances because it is part of the larger organisation.
“It is clearly a situation where Werstas is doing very well and Nootti somewhat less well. The overall result balances out,” Kallio said. “If Nootti were its own organisation, the museum director might have trouble sleeping.”
Kallio said more foreign tourists were travelling in August and that school groups would also visit the museum as autumn approached. He said the museum could improve its figures over time through sustained work and by establishing its operations and public profile.
