Faroese psychiatric care differs from Danish pattern, doctor says

A Danish study has found that 95 per cent of people admitted to psychiatric departments are treated there more than once. The situation in the Faroe Islands is similar, but not identical, according to Kringvarp Føroya (KVF).

The study covers a 20-year period and shows that most people who receive psychiatric treatment return for further care after their first admission.

In the Faroe Islands, the pattern is not exactly the same, says Tórmóður Stórá, chief physician at the psychiatric centre at Landssjúkrahúsið, the country’s hospital.

However, the findings suggest that the most vulnerable people need more support, including in the Faroe Islands.
