Yle reports that residents in Lumijoki must boil all water used for drinking and cooking until further notice after coliform bacteria were found in the municipal water network.

The water must be boiled for at least five minutes. The advice applies throughout Lumijoki, including the Ruutikangas shooting sports centre, but excludes Korvenkylä.

According to a statement from the municipality of Lumijoki, the water may contain bacteria and viruses that cause illness.

Outi Tammilehto, environmental health manager at the Oulu Region Environmental Services, said water samples were initially taken because of an equipment malfunction. She said the boiling advice was issued as a precaution.

According to Tammilehto, no one is known to have fallen ill because of the incident.

Water quality will be monitored more closely through additional samples. The results are expected on Saturday.
