MP attacks Faroese government over defence deal briefing

Jenis av Rana, a member of the Faroese parliament, has sharply criticised the government for failing to properly brief the Foreign Affairs Committee about an upcoming defence agreement between the Faroe Islands and Denmark, KVF reported.

Rana, who represents Midflokkurin and serves on the committee, raised the issue during a debate in the Faroese parliament on Monday. He said the committee should have received more information after Danish Foreign Minister Jeppe Bruus announced the agreement.

Jørgen Niclasen, the committee’s chair, disagreed. He said the government was not required to brief the committee in this case and that the dispute was based on a misunderstanding.

Rana also referred to a letter from the Faroese parliament’s office that committee members received in connection with proposed changes to the parliament’s rules of procedure. Both men cited provisions in the Home Rule Act but interpreted them differently.

According to Niclasen, the issue most likely concerns inaccurate information from the Danish foreign minister rather than a failure by the Faroese government to provide information.
