Porvoo to deploy autonomous street-sweeping robot at night

Porvoo will introduce an electric street-sweeping robot in early August, Yle reports. The robot will independently clean streets and paved areas around the city’s market square and riverfront at night.

The robot travels at a speed of about four kilometres per hour and is roughly the size of a small passenger car. Before entering service, it will be visible on Porvoo’s streets at night as it maps and learns its routes.

The city plans to expand the robot’s operating area based on experience with the service. Porvoo says the aim is to improve the quality of street cleaning.

“Regular cleaning improves the attractiveness of the environment and air quality. The fully electric device reduces energy consumption and emissions,” Keijo Lehtikangas, Porvoo’s maintenance manager, said in a city release.

How to pass the robot

According to the city, the robot uses sensors to monitor its surroundings and stops when it encounters an obstacle, such as a vehicle or a person.

It is also subject to continuous remote monitoring, allowing it to be directed onto a new route if necessary. A camera connection can also be established when required.

On a roadway, drivers can pass the robot in the same way as a work machine. On a pavement, pedestrians can calmly pass it along the edge. The robot should be allowed to finish crossing a pedestrian crossing so that it does not stop in the middle of the crossing.

Porvoo is purchasing the sweeping service from Finnish company Trombia Technologies Oy.
