Police still unable to question suspect in Vaala stabbing

Police have not yet been able to question the 28-year-old man suspected of stabbing three people in Vaala because of his medical condition, Yle reported on Monday.

Oulu police detective chief inspector Marko Kähkönen said the assessment of whether the suspect is fit to be questioned was based on a doctor’s evaluation. Police are consulting a doctor and will question the man as soon as possible.

The man allegedly broke into an apartment in Vaala and stabbed three people on Tuesday, July 14. He was arrested at the scene and remanded in custody by the Oulu District Court on July 17.

Court documents show that the suspect was ordered to undergo a mental examination during the police investigation.

Police suspect him of two counts of attempted murder, one count of attempted manslaughter, aggravated violation of domestic peace and violently resisting a public official.

Kähkönen said the investigation had progressed well and that police had a clear understanding of what happened. The suspect and the victims knew each other, meaning police do not believe the attack was random.

Any charges in the case must be brought by November 24.
