Rosetta hydrofoil remains grounded after Juojärvi accident

The Rosetta hydrofoil remains grounded on Lake Juojärvi in Outokumpu after running aground during a charter cruise on Sunday, Yle reported. No one was injured.

The vessel, which operates from Tuusniemi in North Savo, ran aground shortly after 4 p.m. near Rojakka Island and the Ohtaansalmi bridge. It had passed the wrong side of a channel marker.

Skipper and entrepreneur Eino Räsänen said the accident was caused by several factors, including a technical fault in the vessel’s steering and sunlight reflecting off the chart plotter.

There were 26 passengers and three crew members on board. The passengers were evacuated to Ohtaansalmi and continued to Tuusniemi by bus.

A tug will refloat Rosetta later. Räsänen plans to have the vessel taken to a shipyard in Kuopio for repairs, with the necessary work and costs to be determined later.

The vessel’s cruising season is effectively over. Rosetta operated a few charter cruises on Lake Juojärvi this summer.
