Fewer Faroese students apply to Danish universities

Fewer Faroese students with a Faroese upper secondary education have applied to Danish universities this year compared to 2025, according to figures from the Danish Agency for Science and Higher Education reported by Faroese broadcaster KVF.

Applications from Faroese gymnasium graduates dropped by 14.2%, from 1,019 in 2025 to 873 this year.

Meanwhile, applications to the University of the Faroe Islands rose by 11.5%, with 427 submissions compared to 383 last year.

Martin Tvede Zachariasen, rector of the University of the Faroe Islands, told KVF the shift may reflect natural yearly fluctuations and cautioned against interpreting it as a clear trend.
