Danish TV 2 commentator takes US embassy role amid Greenland dispute

Sofie Rud, formerly a US commentator for Danish broadcaster TV 2, has begun work as a political advisor at the US embassy in Copenhagen, DR reports.

Rud, known for her analysis of American politics on TV 2’s Kampen om USA, confirmed her new position in a LinkedIn post, calling herself “super happy and grateful” for the role, which she said combines her professional interests in Danish and US politics.

Critics, including Liberal Alliance politician Ole Birk Olesen, have condemned the move. Olesen wrote on LinkedIn: “Now you’re working to have the US take over Greenland. I won’t congratulate you on that.”

Political commentator Jarl Cordua echoed the criticism, telling P1 Morgen that working as a political advisor for the US embassy means “legitimising an administration actively working to destabilise the Kingdom of Denmark.” He argued that US President Donald Trump’s primary focus regarding Denmark remains Greenland, making it “naive, if not unlikely,” to assume Rud’s role would not involve that issue.

Mirco Reimer-Elster, a former TV 2 colleague and US analyst, wrote in Jyllands-Posten that Rud is “playing Russian roulette” by accepting the position. He cited US threats against Denmark’s economic interests, challenges to the territorial integrity of the Danish Realm, and disregard for Greenlanders’ repeated rejections of US sovereignty.

Peter Ernstved, editor-in-chief of defence outlet OLFI, defended the appointment, calling Rud a “very critical Donald Trump analyst” and suggesting her hiring signals US recognition that a military takeover of Greenland is “a total no-go.” He argued that her presence could help de-escalate tensions.

Cordua dismissed this view, stating he could not imagine the embassy hiring someone opposed to its political goals.

Rud has not responded to requests for comment from P1 Morgen, but told Ekstra Bladet she had no comment on her new job. She has already started work at the embassy.
