Yellow warning for lightning issued for eastern Norway

Norway’s Meteorological Institute has issued a yellow warning for lightning across Østlandet and parts of Agder, effective from 11:30 on Thursday, according to Yr.no.

The warning covers a risk of thunderstorms with frequent lightning. Some areas may not experience thunderstorms at all, the institute noted.

Intensity is expected to vary locally. In Agder, the risk will diminish early Thursday evening, while it will persist longer in Østlandet.

The institute warned that lightning strikes can ignite fires in buildings and dry vegetation or forests.

People are advised to avoid outdoor activities in exposed areas such as mountains, water, and open fields. Shelter should be sought during thunderstorms, but not under trees or other tall objects.

NAF, the Norwegian Automobile Federation, urged electric vehicle owners to unplug their cars from charging stations during thunderstorms. A direct lightning strike can damage both charging equipment and the vehicle’s electronic systems, NAF said in a press release.

While modern homes and chargers usually have surge protection, NAF recommended unplugging as a precaution. Owners in areas prone to lightning strikes were advised to consult an electrician about additional safeguards, such as lightning conductors or upgraded surge protection.

For those traveling, NAF advised charging the vehicle to the recommended level, typically 80 percent, and unplugging before departure if thunderstorms are forecast.
