Faroese government to allow speed cameras in municipalities

The new government agreement will, like the previous one, permit municipalities to install speed cameras, Faroese public broadcaster KVF reports.

A previous bill to allow the measure was introduced in parliament on 4 December last year but was not passed before the general election was called.

The former parliament had urged the government to submit a bill allowing municipalities to set up speed cameras at particularly dangerous locations in urban areas.

Under the current law, municipalities do not have the authority to use speed cameras for general traffic monitoring to improve safety and security. The proposed change would require municipalities to consult with police and obtain their approval before installing the cameras. Only police would be permitted to operate them, and any footage must be deleted within 30 days of recording.

The speed camera bill will be presented to parliament this autumn.
