Kajaani allocates €620,000 for new waterslide at Kaukavesi

Kajaani will spend €620,000 on a new waterslide at the Kaukavesi aquatic centre, a cost nearly double the initial estimate of €350,000, Yle reports.

The price rose due to the slide’s custom design, which includes partial outdoor routing requiring thermal insulation and weather-resistant materials. The project also covers renewal of internal staircases and the landing pool to meet current safety standards.

Many residents consider the cost excessive. “It sounds absurd,” said Joona Sarisalmi, a local father. Others, like Mauri Kankaanpää, support the investment in youth activities but question the pricing. The city council approved the budget increase unanimously.

City officials defend the expense as part of a broader strategy to promote physical activity. Kaukavesi’s visitor numbers have grown, and the centre is seen as vital for daily well-being, according to acting city manager Joni Partanen.

The old slide, in use for over 12 years with 133,000 annual rides, was deteriorating and would have required removal soon, said construction chief Henri Summanen. The new slide will be installed by late August, with full assembly completed in September.
