Only 27 students have enrolled in Skive’s teacher training programme this year, down 25% from 36 in 2025, reports DR. The programme has capacity for 170 new students.
Skive mayor Alfred Brunsgaard (V) called the decline disappointing but stressed the need to preserve the programme to maintain qualified teachers in local schools.
“If we want to keep a high percentage of trained teachers in our primary schools, we need this education,” he said, adding he had hoped for higher numbers.
Frederik Nørgaard Sivebæk, chair of the local student association, said action is needed to reverse the trend. In 2024, low enrolment led VIA’s board to propose closing the programme and consolidating West Jutland’s teacher training in Holstebro. A political agreement providing 6 million kroner annually for three years kept it open.
Sivebæk noted Skive’s smaller programme could offer graduates better local job prospects than larger cities like Aarhus.
