Faroese rune stone to be 3D-scanned

A rune stone discovered at Sondum in Sandur will be 3D-scanned to create a digital model, Faroese broadcaster KVF reports.

The digital model will preserve the stone and allow for detailed analysis, as lighting and shadows can be adjusted to make the runic inscriptions easier to read.

Part of the stone is broken, and some runes are missing. Archaeologists at the National Museum believe they can decipher the words “hvílir” (rest) and “her” (here), suggesting it may be a gravestone.

The stone was found in the floor of a building believed to be a medieval church. The archaeological excavation at Sondum will continue into August, when a runology expert will arrive in the Faroe Islands to examine the stone.
