Exhibition showcases working vintage radios in Kemi

A summer exhibition in Kemi is displaying a collection of vintage radios, many of which remain functional, to mark a century of Finnish broadcasting history.

The display, housed in the Rantaniemi building in Meripuisto, was assembled by retired music technology teacher Matti Adolfsen using his own devices and borrowed pieces. Some visitors have traveled from across Europe and the US to see it.

Adolfsen, who once built audio equipment for Yleisradio, restores tube radios on-site as part of the interactive experience. A 100-year-old horn speaker, still capable of playing broadcasts, is among the exhibits.

While the current focus is on radio, Adolfsen notes that next year could feature television, as Yleisradio’s TV operations began in 1957. Radio amateurs have shown particular interest, with many leaving their call signs in the guestbook for others to recognize over the airwaves.

The exhibition has also drawn former Yleisradio employees, some of whom have revisited old tools and equipment. A 1965 Philips receiver near the entrance has proven a strong attraction, with many visitors recognizing it from their childhood homes.
