Search and Rescue Operation Underway for Missing Young Man in Vestmannaeyjar

A search operation for a missing 21-year-old man is currently taking place in Vestmannaeyjar, Iceland. The Coast Guard’s rescue vessel, Þór, has been deployed to assist, and local officials anticipate that a rescue helicopter will be called out shortly.

The man, identified as Helgi Ingimar Þórðarson, was last seen while attending a local festival, wearing black pants, a black hoodie, and a dark green jacket. The Chief of Police in Vestmannaeyjar, Karl Gauti Hjaltason, has reported that the search thus far has yielded no results. Search teams have already scoured the area known as Hamarinn, and the rescue boat was called for additional support around noon.

Concerns for Helgi were raised by his family, who had been in contact with him prior to his disappearance. The police began their initial search around Herjólfsdal and along the coastline as soon as they received the report. Despite challenging conditions for the search, the police have been utilizing drones, noting that visibility remains decent despite strong winds and precipitation.

Authorities are urging anyone who may have information regarding Helgi’s whereabouts to contact the police by dialing 112.
