Steamship Tarjanne returns to service Wednesday after bearing repair

The 118-year-old steamship Tarjanne will resume its regular route on Wednesday after a bearing failure forced it to halt on Friday, Yle reports.
Captain Jari Niemi of Suomen Hopealinjat said a new bearing was machined over the weekend at a workshop in Ylöjärvi and installed on Monday. No other damage to the steam engine was found.
The vessel’s journey was interrupted Friday afternoon on Lake Näsijärvi in Ruovesi, with 50 passengers and eight crew aboard. The chief engineer stopped the engine to prevent further damage, the ship was anchored, and the captain notified emergency services. Passengers were not in danger.
Saturday’s cruises were cancelled. Niemi said customers booked for Saturday were contacted immediately and offered alternative cruises or refunds. Compensation claims from Friday’s disrupted trip will be handled case by case.
