Man convicted in Tampere mass stabbing appeals sentence

A 24-year-old man convicted of a mass stabbing near Tampere’s Ratina shopping centre has notified Pirkanmaa District Court of his dissatisfaction with the verdict, Yle reports.

Ville-Valtteri Johannes Väänänen was sentenced last Tuesday to 9.5 years in prison for three counts of attempted murder and one count of aggravated assault. The attacks occurred in July 2025, when he stabbed four randomly selected people near the shopping centre.

The court ruled that Väänänen was criminally responsible at the time of the offence and deemed him extremely dangerous to the life, health, or freedom of others, citing his prior criminal history. He was given a combined sentence, which applies to highly dangerous offenders and bars early release or parole.

A separate charge of illegal threat was dismissed. Väänänen has 30 days from the verdict to appeal to the Court of Appeals.
