Sunila residential area in Kotka gains UNESCO World Heritage status

The Sunila residential area in Kotka was officially inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List on Sunday as one of 13 sites in the Aalto Works series.

Residents gathered in the morning to watch the live announcement from the UNESCO World Heritage Committee meeting in South Korea. Celebrations erupted shortly after 10:00 local time when the decision was confirmed.

“There were tears of joy, and the atmosphere was exuberant,” said local resident Jani Kylmänen. “As I walked back to my home, we congratulated each other with neighbors we met along the way.”

The area, designed by Alvar Aalto and built between 1938 and 1954, is home to around 1,100 people. The Pro Sunila residents’ association, which has worked for years to preserve Aalto’s legacy and secure the designation, hailed the news as “incredibly wonderful.”

Association chair Anne Stocker expects tourism to surge, potentially multiplying visitor numbers. Kotka city planning director Markku Hannonen said the city will now plan improvements to accommodate increased tourism, including standardized signage across all Aalto Works sites.

Residents hope the status will also boost local business and employment opportunities.
