Aalto buildings added to UNESCO World Heritage List

Thirteen buildings designed by Alvar, Aino, and Elissa Aalto have been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as a single serial property, Aalto Works, the Finnish broadcaster Yle reports.

The sites, located across Finland, were officially approved on Sunday. Panu Savolainen, professor of architectural history at Aalto University, called the inclusion a landmark moment for Finnish architecture.

“This may well be the most significant recognition Finnish architecture has ever received—certainly among the very greatest,” Savolainen told Yle.

He added that the listing could raise global awareness of the Aaltos’ work and potentially boost architectural tourism in Finland.
