Sejerø launches campaign to attract families with children

Sejerø island is targeting families with children in a new campaign, as its population continues to decline, Danish broadcaster DR reports.

The island, home to just under 300 residents, has seen its numbers drop from around 350 over the past five years. Local residents fear the small school may close without enough students to justify teaching and childcare positions.

Bibi Dannemann of the Sejerø Residents’ Association, who is leading the campaign, said the community wants to keep the school open. A recent departure of a family with four children has highlighted the issue.

Betina Geissler, a teacher and pedagogue at the island’s school, noted the quiet schoolyard and limited social opportunities for children. “It doesn’t have to be children the same age as mine, but just having more life here would help,” she said.

The campaign includes a video promoting Sejerø as an idyllic place to live, with the tagline: “We are an island in the blue for young and old.”
