Dana Cup deploys observer corps to protect referees

Some 280 referees from 12 countries are officiating at this year’s Dana Cup in Hjørring, where organisers have introduced an observer corps to monitor their safety, according to a DR report.

The youth tournament, one of the world’s largest with 20,000 participants from 56 nations, has seen increased focus on referee protection after recent incidents of physical and verbal abuse on Danish pitches.

Thomas Jensen, the tournament’s referee coordinator, said the measure is necessary because football provokes strong emotions among players, coaches, and parents. “I don’t think we’ll ever move past that,” he told DR.

Referees can report misconduct, prompting observers to monitor the offending team. If needed, team leaders may be called for a discussion.

Eva Ravn, a referee from Hobro, welcomed the added security. “If something happens, we have somewhere to turn, and they handle it immediately,” she said. While she has not faced issues this year, she noted that the mix of nationalities can test less experienced referees, as some players have more volatile tempers.
