Finland’s Supreme Court rejects Timo Vornanen’s appeal in firearms case

Finland’s Supreme Court has rejected an appeal request from MP Timo Vornanen, leaving in force a district court ruling that sentenced him to an eight-month suspended prison term, Yle reports.

Vornanen was convicted in December 2025 on charges including assault, two counts of illegal threats, reckless handling, firearms offences, and a firearms violation stemming from a 2024 shooting incident in central Helsinki.

The MP had sought leave to appeal the Court of Appeal’s decision to refuse further processing without a full hearing. The Supreme Court only considers appeals under exceptional circumstances.

Vornanen called the decision “regrettable from the perspective of people’s legal protection” in a public social media post. He added that he would now focus on his duties as an MP, stating: “I will continue working for the benefit of Finns.”

Vornanen was expelled from the Finns Party parliamentary group in May 2024 and has since served as a one-member group in parliament. He had previously indicated he might resign as an MP if the conviction became final.
