Lomalists rush to spas as rain clouds appear on weather maps

Finnish spas report surge in last-minute bookings as cool, wet summer weather drives visitors indoors.

Yle surveyed 15 spa hotels across Finland and found all reported increased visitor numbers in recent days. Many guests are making same-day reservations after checking weather forecasts, according to operators.

“This is every hotel manager’s dream weather,” said Minna Nyman, manager of Holiday Club Saimaa in Lappeenranta. While the summer has been warmer than average overall, fewer heat days and persistent rain in southern Finland have created a cooler impression.

Turku’s Caribia and Tampere’s Kehräämö spas have been fully booked for much of July due to the unstable conditions. “Families decide where to go on the same day,” said Jussi Valtola, who manages both properties.

Tuomas Telemäki, sales and customer relations manager at Ikaalinen Spa, said last weekend’s heavy rains triggered a visitor peak. “Rooms were filled with last-minute bookings, and a few had to be turned away.”

Apa Salmi, CEO of Peurungan Spa in Laukaa, noted that people nationwide are now checking forecasts before deciding destinations. “Where they go depends entirely on the weather outlook.”

At Bomba Spa in Nurmes, Sanna Tenhunen said holidaymakers are drawn regardless of conditions. Meanwhile, Leppävirta’s Vesileppis spa attracts cottage owners seeking warmth for a day or two.

In Sodankylä, Luostotunturi Spa sees timing shift with weather: sunny days bring visitors after outdoor activities, while rain drives early arrivals, said hotel manager Tarja Heikkinen.
