Police see no operational shortcomings in Lahti brawl

Häme police on Thursday said they found no deficiencies in their response to a mass brawl that broke out in central Lahti on 11 July following a high-risk football match between FC Lahti and HJK Helsinki.

Officers detained 48 people during the disorder, which left six criminal complaints filed and resulted in damage to a fan-favoured restaurant. Two men, aged 17 and 21, now face charges of possessing items capable of causing serious harm after allegedly carrying a smoke flare and an emergency flare in the city centre.

Senior investigating officer Superintendent Tero Veijonmaa said police arrived at the scene within minutes of receiving an emergency call and denied suggestions that officers had allowed the violence to unfold.

“We have thoroughly assessed our actions and found no shortcomings,” Veijonmaa said in a statement. “We were well prepared with sufficient resources and comprehensive operational plans for crowd management before, during and after the match.”

Police classified the fixture as high-risk and coordinated additional support from other agencies ahead of kick-off. Officers conducted briefings and reviewed contingency plans with staff at the start of their shifts, though Veijonmaa acknowledged that some assaults during the brawl may never come to light.

Investigators have not established that the confrontation was premeditated, but noted that the chosen location, Paasikivenaukiolla, appeared deliberately selected rather than random. Current inquiries include assault, illegal disguise and criminal damage, while a separate case examines the possession of suspected narcotics and fan paraphernalia recovered from a seized bag.
