Danish shelters receive an average of 38 pets per day during the summer peak season, according to data from DR.

In June alone, 1,144 animals were surrendered to shelters run by Dyrenes Beskyttelse, marking an increase compared to the same period last year. The surge aligns with the typical summer trend, when owners abandon pets due to travel plans or inability to care for them.

Unwanted litters are another major contributor. Karina Fisker, shelter manager at Dyrenes Beskyttelse, cited a lack of sterilization among cat owners as a key factor leading to thousands of kittens entering shelters annually.

The organization expects the high intake to continue through October, describing the situation as a constant struggle for space and resources.
