Paraati tradition thrives at Kotka’s Meripäivät festival

The 50th anniversary parade of Kotka’s Meripäivät festival drew thousands of spectators despite a grey weather forecast.

Published by Yle, the opening parade on Wednesday marked the launch of Finland’s largest summer event, a tradition dating back to 1962.

Local sports clubs, organisations and businesses took part in the colourful procession that lined Kotka’s central streets. White-clad female gymnasts led the parade, followed by troupes performing choreographed routines and circus school performers.

KTP basketball players, swimmers from Aquila club and characters from children’s literature joined the procession, which runs from Wednesday through Saturday in the city centre and harbour.

Attendees filled balconies and pavements, with organisers estimating strong turnout despite unsettled weather.
