Tragic road death in Pasvik after collision with military vehicle

A 21-year-old woman died in a head-on crash with a military vehicle in Sør-Varanger on Tuesday morning, Norwegian outlet Dagbladet reports.

The accident occurred shortly before 11 a.m. near one of the border stations in Pasvik. Two soldiers were also involved, according to the Norwegian Armed Forces. Both were taken to hospital but are not seriously injured.

Brynjar Stordal, press spokesman for the Armed Forces, confirmed the soldiers belong to the Army’s Jegerbataljonen based at Garrisonen i Sør-Varanger. Their next of kin have been notified.

Police and the Norwegian Public Roads Administration’s accident investigation unit are probing the crash. Authorities have stated there is no suspicion of impaired driving.

Sør-Varanger municipality has activated its crisis team following the fatality.
