Summer has been warmer than expected – warmer weather forecast for the weekend

Finland’s summer has been milder than many residents believe, according to meteorologist Aleksi Lohtander of national broadcaster Yle.

While social media has been filled with complaints about a chilly season, Lohtander said June and the first half of July have been about one degree warmer than the long-term average.

He noted that the perception of a cold summer stems from three factors: fewer heatwave days than usual, frequent rain in southern Finland, and the human tendency to remember recent weather rather than monthly averages.

“This summer, heat days have been scattered rather than forming extended spells,” Lohtander said. “There have been a few hot days followed by cooler periods.”

Temperatures are expected to rise again by the end of the week. From Friday to Sunday, southern and central Finland should see daytime highs around 20 °C, while northern regions will reach 15–20 °C by the weekend. Eastern Finland is forecast to be the warmest, with possible highs of 22–23 °C on Saturday and Sunday.

The weekend may bring scattered rain, but warmer conditions are expected across the country.
