Flyers distributed to tourists on how to act if they encounter a wolf

Tourists visiting coastal towns in Varde Municipality, Denmark, are receiving flyers with official guidance on what to do if they encounter a wolf in the wild.

The flyers, produced by the Danish Agency for Nature and Forestry, are now available at holiday homes, tourist offices and campsites in areas including Vejers, Henne, Blåvand and Oksbøl. The information is printed in Danish, German and English.

Varde Municipality has distributed the flyers in partnership with Destination Vesterhavet, the local tourism organization. The municipality’s second deputy mayor, Sandie Eis Ravn (Social Democrats), said the aim is to reassure visitors and prevent surprises in the countryside.

“We have a lot of tourists, and we want them to be happy. That’s why it’s important to communicate clearly,” she said.

The flyers cover three topics: how to behave during a wolf encounter in nature, what to do if wolves are near homes, and how to manage interactions between dogs and wolves. Destination Vesterhavet director Majken Graver said the information is also vital for seasonal workers who may need to pass it on to visitors.

The Danish Agency for Nature and Forestry has also advised that children under 10 should be accompanied by adults in the Oksbøl wolf territory.
