Police investigate stabbing incident in Akureyri, Iceland

Saturday 3rd August 2024 on 14:13 in Iceland

The police in North East Iceland are currently investigating a stabbing incident that occurred in downtown Akureyri last night. Fortunately, the victim is not facing life-threatening injuries. Overall, the night was relatively calm for police departments throughout the country.

Authorities reported that an unspecified number of individuals are in custody in connection with the attack, and investigations are ongoing. Despite the incident, the atmosphere in Akureyri remained quiet overall, with the only other noteworthy event being a minor call related to a fire in a dumpster in downtown Reykjavik.

In Eastern Iceland, local festivities such as the Neistaflug town festival and the Hagyrðingamót event were taking place, with police reporting little issue at these gatherings. A single emergency call was made regarding a fire in a sauna near Lagarfljót, but no injuries were reported.

Across other regions, police reported similarly tranquil nights, particularly in the Westfjords and on the South Coast. In Borgarnes, many people gathered for the Landsmót UMFÍ event, yet police indicated that the night was uneventful. Although there were some human gatherings in locations such as Flúðir, officials characterized the evening as “very calm.”

As the investigations continue in Akureyri, the situation in the rest of the country appears stable with no major incidents reported.
