Faroe Islands move up to 37th place on Paris MoU white list

The Faroe Islands have risen to 37th place among 40 countries on the Paris MoU white list, according to the latest annual report released this month. The Faroese flagged fleet now ranks above Belgium, Poland and Canada.

The Paris Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) conducts port state control inspections on ships entering European and North Atlantic ports to verify compliance with onboard safety standards. The white list ranks flag states based on their performance in these inspections.

The Faroese Maritime Authority noted that ships flying the Faroese flag were detained eight times during 225 inspections over the past three years. In 2024, the islands ranked 30th on the list.

“It is crucial to maintain progress and ensure the Faroe Islands continue to hold their position on the white list,” the authority stated. It added that stricter flag state controls and proactive measures are needed to reduce deficiencies and prevent detentions.
